Category C/C1


A category C1 driving licence is required for drivers of motor vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg and designed to carry a maximum of eight passengers.

In the case of vehicles exceeding 7,500 kg, a category C driving license is required.
Vehicles carrying more than eight passengers require a category D or D1 license in addition to the driver’s seat

Are you a professional driver?

A category C-C1 driving license is sufficient for (semi-)trailers whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg. Otherwise, a driving license of category CE-C1E is required.

To become a professional driver, you must meet the professional aptitude requirements (CAP).

Theory test

In order to obtain your category C/C1 driving license, you must pass a theory test. In a basic test, you will be asked 50 multiple-choice questions. In order to obtain a professional aptitude certificate (PAC), 50 additional questions, 8 case studies, and an oral exam must be completed.

In order to prepare for your driving test, you can either take theory lessons at an accredited driving school or study on your own.

Passed?

You will be issued a provisional driving licence after passing the theory test, which will enable you to obtain your driving licence from your local council within three years after passing the theory test. In addition to practical driver training courses offered by accredited driving schools, you have the option to enroll in private driver training courses as well.

Failed ?

Failure to pass the theory test on the same day prevents you from retaking it.

Category D1 - D

Category D1

It is mandatory for drivers of motor vehicles carrying 9 to 16 passengers, in addition to the driver, to have a category D1 driving licence.

Category D

Motor vehicle drivers who carry more than 16 passengers, in addition to the driver, need a category D driving license.

Driving licenses of category D-D1 are sufficient for trailers with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg. Otherwise, you will need a driving license in category DE-D1E.

In order to become a professional driver, you must satisfy the professional aptitude requirements (PAC).

Theory test

You must pass a theory test before you can obtain your category D/D1 driving licence. 50 multiple-choice questions make up the basic test. It contains 50 additional questions, eight case studies, and an oral test in order to obtain a professional aptitude certificate (PAC).

It is possible to prepare for your driving test by taking practical training at a driving school or by self-learning.

Upon passing the theory test, you will receive a request for a driving licence, which allows you to obtain your driving licence from your local council within three years of passing the theory test. Private driver training and accredited driving schools are two options for practical driver training.

Failure to pass the theory test on the same day prevents you from retaking it.

Practical test

A provisional licence covers private driver training undertaken in a driving school or a driving school that is accredited to conduct practical driver training.

The theory test must have been passed within the last 3 years or you must be exempt from taking the practical test.

In order to take the test, you will need to pay in advance at the examination center. Payment by Bancontact is strongly recommended to ensure your security and ours. There is no acceptance of credit cards.

A driving licence request will be issued to you if you pass the practical test, enabling you to obtain your license from your local council within 3 years of passing the practical test.

Failed?

In the event of a failure in the practical test, you are unable to re-appear for the test on the same day. When you fail the test twice, you will only be able to take it again after attending at least 4 hours of additional driving lessons at an accredited driving school. After the third test, the vehicle must be provided by the accredited driving school.

*A provisional driving licence may be obtained at the age of 18 and a practical driving test may be taken at 18. It is still necessary to be 21 or 24 years old to obtain a full driving licence, however.

** As a minor, your driving licence will display the code 121: you will be limited to regular transport within the territory of Belgium (within 50 km of your home) until the age of 20. Until you reach the age of 21, you can only transport passengers within the territory of Belgium. You may then apply to have this code removed at your local council offices.

* A provisional driving license can be obtained and the practical test taken from the age of 18 under the current legislation. It is still necessary to be 21 years of age (category D1) or 24 years of age (category D) to obtain a full license.

All documents must be original and valid.
If you are missing any documents, the test will not take place and you will still be charged for the cost of the test.
Identity card The test will take place on condition that you have the out-of-date identity card with you and can present a receipt issued by your local council offices proving you have applied for renewal. The application for a provisional driving license and/or full driving license will be retained in the database at the examination center. It will only be issued on presentation of a valid identity card. Without the receipt, the test will not take place.
