IELTS Band Score Requirement for Study Visa and Immigration
It’s finally time for you to arrive!
In other words, I believe you already know something about IELTS, which stands for International English Language Testing System. It provides aspirants who want to study, work or immigrate to countries with English as their first (or one of their primary) language with a means of testing their proficiency.
Non-natives would face their first barrier upon arrival if they didn’t speak the language of the country they were coming from. Therefore, each country has their own system for measuring the competence of individuals. As a result, you need to know the IELTS band score requirements according to your needs and the country you wish to study in.
It is true that these countries do not only accept IELTS as a standard of proficiency. The PTE,TOEFL, CELPIP, Duolingo, TOEIC, as well as other alternatives are also available to you. Their acceptance in countries and their fulfillment of requirements are all equally important. Taking all these into consideration, you might ask:
The IELTS test might seem the most challenging among all the tests based on the experience of those who have taken all of them. Unlike other tests that are more technical, the IELTS exam relies heavily on the instincts of the test-taker, making it more predictable and approachable for non-native speakers.
However… (Unlike usual, here the good part begins after the ‘but’)
PTA is mostly acceptable in Australia and New Zealand (selectively in a few Canadian universities) and is primarily considered for study visas, TOEFL is tedious and exhausting, CELPIP is only accepted in Canada, Duolingo is still relatively new and hasn’t reached a wider audience, and TOEIC is primarily for work visas, whereas IELTS, although divided into two segments, is predominantly for students seeking work visas. English proficiency tests, such as IELTS Academic and IELTS General, are considered the gold standard in all countries, regardless of their needs.
A nice aggregate score on your IELTS Academic exam will open doors to top-notch colleges regardless of your country of residence if you have good grades to justify their cut-offs. Also, IELTS general is accepted for Permanent Residency and Work visas in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and Ireland!
Consequently, if you wish to have multiple options at your disposal, IELTS is your most suitable choice. In addition, IELTS is offered in two formats to this day: a paper-based test, and a computer-delivered test, also known as CD IELTS. IDP, the body that owns and conducts IELTS, recently introduced an Online IELTS exam that can be taken from the comfort of your own home. However, it has not yet become widely accepted or practiced.
It will be helpful to read a detailed explanation of how IELTS band scores are calculated for each module to fully understand the weighting and grading system.
Let’s move on to the part you came here to see.
IELTS Band Score Requirements for Students (Study Visa)
As a result of their diverse cultures, impeccable quality, competitive pay, and lucrative prospects for skilled workers, the five countries listed below are the hottest destinations in terms of education for foreign nationals worldwide.
|Country||Bachelor’s (minimum)||Master’s (minimum)|
|New Zealand||6.0 to 6.5||6.0 to 6.5|
|Canada||5.5 to 6.0||6.0 to 6.5|
|U.K||6.5||7.0 to 7.5|
According to the above list, most universities and colleges in these countries require a minimum level of education. If you are interested in attending the most prestigious institutions in your country, the requirements may vary.
Accordingly, all top universities require students to have at least 6.5 bands, even though the average band requirement for Canada is 6.0. For universities such as MIT, Harvard, and Yale, a band score of 7.0 is required, whereas Carnegie Melon University, Northwestern University, and New York University do not accept bands below 7.5.
For Australia, while most colleges accept band scores of 6.5 or higher, a minimum band score of 6.5 is required for all four IELTS modules: learning, reading, writing, and speaking. Almost all universities in New Zealand follow the score above regardless of their rankings, with the exception of the Engineering course, which requires a minimum of 7.0.
Please note for U.K. applicants: While IELTS is also divided into Academic and General in the U.K. (both are approved by the U.K. Visa and Immigration), the U.K. IELTS test is known as IELTS UKVI. When booking your test dates, you have the option of choosing the IELTS UKVI test if you are planning to study or immigrate anywhere within the United Kingdom.
There is no need to worry, the test format and modules will remain the same. You will only notice a difference in how your results are calculated and scored. Your proficiency is marked/measured numerically and a level rating is assigned using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) that is grouped alphabetically from A0/A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 as shown below.
As the exam is strictly monitored by the UKIV and test centers must meet a separate set of requirements for testing, it is important to keep the CEFR system in mind for United Kingdom visas.
IELTS Band Score Requirements for immigration (Permanent Residency - PR)
The human race has always moved to different places since time immemorial for various reasons, but most of them were related to existence and self-preservation. Over the last 50 years, moving abroad has been primarily motivated by economic reasons – better pay and a higher standard of living.
The IELTS General exam is, therefore, once again the standard for checking non-native English speakers’ English language proficiency in predominantly English-speaking countries.
For students, IELTS band score cut-offs are set by their respective universities, while for immigrants, they are set by the government bodies that are responsible (the Ministry of Immigrations). Further, these scores are accompanied by points that are awarded to applicants. The number of points scored by the applicant plays an important role in determining whether or not the applicant receives an early ITA (Invitation to Apply). More points would be awarded if the band score was higher.
Since getting a permanent residency permit for the US and the U.K is quite complicated and not easily available in comparison to these countries, we will only cover three countries (Australia, New Zealand, and Canada). People planning to migrate to these countries are most likely to make the best choice if they want to live in a country that is immigrant-friendly.
In Australia, the IELTS band score requirements for PR visas vary depending on the mode of application. There are three ways to immigrate to Australia. There are three types of immigration programs: General Skilled Migration, Employer-Sponsored Migration, and Global Talent Visa, of which the first is the most popular. Office of Immigration Australia states that applicants score 20 points if they score 8.0 or more, 10 points for 7.0 and 7.5 bands, and zero points for scores below 7.
For an Australian PR application, IELTS band scores are considered not only in terms of their cumulative grade, but also in terms of the individual bands they received in the test. Therefore, an applicant must score at least 8 on all modules in order to get those 20 points, and 7.0 on the modules in order to get those 10 points.
IELTS CERTIFICATE FOR SALE
Applicants applying for permanent residency in New Zealand must possess IELTS only if they are skilled immigrants (Skilled Migrant Category) or if they are family members of a blood relative (Family Category Visa). For the skilled category, you need an overall band score of 6.5 or more, and for the dependent category, you need a basic aggregate score of 5.
Also, Canada rewards applicants according to their band score and has its own grading system. It uses a grading system called the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB), which has a maximum of 10 points and a minimum of 1 point. However, anything below CLB 5 is not considered for additional points.
As well as these points, they differ depending on whether the applicant is applying as an individual or with their spouse. You can get a better understanding of this by looking at the table below.
How to Get a Good IELTS Band Score?
Preparation is the key.
There is always a different key for every door, regardless of which one you choose. The only thing that matters is how well you know the English language and its grammar. IELTS test preparation can be divided into two categories: Academic and General.
