What can you drive with a Category AM driving licence?

When you hold a Category AM driving licence, you are able to drive a moped with two, three, or four wheels if you fit the requirements. Your driving entitlement may be restricted according to the code that you have.

Obtaining a Category AM driver’s license means that you must have reached the age of 16 at the time of application.

Mopeds cannot be driven unless you have a moped driving permit or a driving licence that is intended for driving mopeds, so if you do not have one of these documents, you are illegally driving a moped.

When you hold a Category AM driving licence, you are able to drive a moped with two, three, or four wheels if you fit the requirements. Your driving entitlement may be restricted according to the code that you have.

A moped can be driven on a two-wheel, three-wheel, or four-wheel basis depending on what type of model you choose. As a driver, you are not allowed to drive either type of vehicle, depending on whether you have a code next to Category AM on your driving licence, or whether you have a moped driving permit. It was not until 2005 that motorcycles were allowed to be driven on the roads without a driving permit.

The use of a moped as a means of towing a trailer is not allowed.

The top speed of a moped while it is running should not exceed 45 km/h at any time.

With code 145 or 146 or a moped driving permit

You can ride a moped with two wheels.

You can drive a moped with three or four wheels if its unladen weight is no more than 150 kg. If the moped is electrically powered, the batteries should not be included in the moped’s unladen weight.

  • A Category A1 driving licence is also valid for Category AM 146.

  • With a moped driving permit, your driving entitlement is only valid in Norway. You can drive in other countries if you exchange your moped driving permit for a driving licence for Category AM 146.

To exchange your moped driving permit with Category AM 146, you must fill out an application form on paper and send it to your local driver and vehicle licensing office (trafikkstasjon).

Codes 143 and 144, for example, are as follows:

  • Due to code 143, tractors and trailers can be driven at any speed. Trailers must not exceed 750 kg in weight authorised.

  • When the tractor cannot drive faster than 40 km/h, you can tow a trailer weighing more than 750 kg.

This is a tractor

A tractor driver can operate his machine with or without a trailer. The maximum combined mass of a tractor and trailer cannot exceed 25,000 kg, and the maximum speed cannot exceed 40 km/hour.

Upon reaching 21 or holding Category T for two years, the weight restriction will end.

Your driving rights are restricted or extended in a variety of ways by the various codes:

141 is a high-speed code

With code 141 on your driving license, you can drive a tractor at a maximum speed of 50 km/h. There are driving schools that offer courses leading to the code 141.

Code 142 has no weight or speed restrictions

If your driver’s license has code 142, you are not restricted by weight or speed. If you acquire Category CE, you will receive code 142.

If you acquired a tractor or car driving license before 1 January 2005, you will also have code 142.

There is no restriction on trailer weight, but there is no limitation on trailer speed

Those with code 143 on their license can have a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of 750 kg. Speed is not limited. You will get code 143 if you acquire Category C.

144 – Maximum combined mass is limited

You cannot combine the maximum authorised mass of tractor and trailer if you have code 144 on your license. There is a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour. The code 144 will be given to you if you acquire Category BE.

In code 148, the combined maximum authorised mass is limited at a higher speed

You can drive a tractor with a maximum speed of 50 km/h if you have code 148 on your driving license. No more than 25,000 kg can be combined with the tractor and trailer. If you have code 144 and attend a driving school, you can get code 148.

Driver’s licence codes 147 and 149 – three- and four-wheel mopeds

Please see “Moped with three or four wheels” below. The code 147 will be issued to those who are 18 years or older when they acquire Category T, and the code 149 will be issued to those under 18 years of age.

Equipment with motors

With or without a trailer, you can drive motorised equipment. A forklift and a wheel loader are two examples of motorised equipment.

Neither the motorised equipment nor the trailer can exceed 25,000 kilograms in total weight. Motorised equipment must not exceed 40 km/h, and the trailer cannot exceed 25,000 kilograms.

You will no longer be restricted by weight if you have held Category T for two years or have reached the age of 21.

Codes entered next to Category T on your driving licence also apply to motorised equipment. The codes on tractors are explained above.

Category T without codes allows you to drive motorised equipment, with or without a trailer, that is not designed to carry passengers or goods. Maximum speed must not exceed 30 km/h.

All-terrain vehicles

Tractor-registered ATVs can be driven. In this case, the same rules apply as for tractors.

A tricycle or quadcycle with three or four wheels

It is possible to drive either a three-wheeled or four-wheeled moped.

When the moped’s unladen weight (without the driver) exceeds 150 kg, you must be at least 18 years old. It is not recommended to include the batteries in the unladen weight of an electrically powered moped.

Using a snowmobile

A Category T licence acquired before 1 July 2006

Snowmobiles can be driven with or without trailer sledges.

This is marked as Category S on your driving license.

It is legal to drive a snowmobile in Norway and Sweden with a snowmobile driving license.

With a Category S driving license, what can you drive?

Category S licenses are valid for open snowmobiles with or without trailer sledges. A Category S licence is not always required.

Category S driving licenses are only available to drivers 16 years or older.

Also see: How to get a Category S driving license

Snowmobiles, such as those classified as Category 1 (code B1) or Category 2 (code B2), can be identified from the vehicle registration certificate.

A snowmobile that is open

Snowmobiles with and without trailer sledges can be driven on all types of open terrain.

You must be at least 18 years old to participate

Category 1 snowmobiles are the only ones that can be driven by those younger than 18 years of age.

Snowmobiles of Category 1 have a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.20 kW/kg.

Norway and Sweden allow you to drive

Unlike other categories of driving licences, Category S is not recognized worldwide. In Norway and Sweden, you are still allowed to drive. It is necessary to register the snowmobile in Norway or Sweden.

When driving, be careful where you go

There are restrictions on where and how snowmobiles can be driven to protect the environment.

Visit the Norwegian Environment Agency’s web pages on motor traffic on uncultivated land (Norwegian only).

Snowmobiles are normally not allowed on public roads.

Does a Category S driving license have to be held before driving a snowmobile?

Prior to 1 July 2006, if you hold a driver’s license

If you acquired a motorcycle, passenger car, or tractor license before 1 July 2006, you can drive an open snowmobile. The training and tests for Category S do not have to be completed.

It is possible to drive a snowmobile with a Swedish driving permit in some cases

Norwegian diving permits are not valid if you had a Swedish snowmobile driving permit when you lived in Norway.

It is only possible to drive a snowmobile in Norway if you either:

  • When you obtained your Swedish driving permit, you had a normal residence in Sweden

  • At least six months spent living in Sweden as a student

A permit is required if you participate in organized group trips

For participants without driving entitlements, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration may grant organisers a permit to run group trips by snowmobile. It is required that participants from Norway hold a driving license in a different category. In order to drive a motor vehicle in Norway, foreign participants must produce a driving license. Participants must possess the necessary skills.

This trip must meet all Lovdata criteria (norwegian only).

When you have a temporary residence permit under certain circumstances

A temporary residence permit in Norway allows you to apply for a snowmobile driving permit.

  • Driver’s license issued by a foreign country

  • Passed the Norwegian theory test after completing the mandatory training

  • Document your snowmobile driving work in Norway

Is there another category of driving license you would like to obtain?
